Becky Carson - Director of Special Education

 

Becky Carson is the Director of Special Education for Seminole ISD. She formerly served the district as a educational diagnostician for Elementary and Junior High; third grade teacher at Seminole Primary for 8 years; and counselor at Seminole Elementary for 6 years.

Mrs. Carson's duties include coordinating all special education programs, overseeing the duties of the Educational Diagnosticians, applying for and dispersing of the federal funds for special education, planning special education in-service programs, and goal setting for the special education component of the District Improvement Plan.

James Ottaberry - TVI / O&M Specialist/Homebound Teacher

 

James Ottaberry is currently the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), Orientation & Mobility Specialist (O&M) and Homebound Teacher for the district.

As TVI, he travels to the students' assigned schools to address the unique learning needs created by a visual impairment as well as provide direct and/or consultative services relating to the vision loss.

Orientation and Mobility Specialists teach children and adults who have visual impairment the specific orientation skills used to find one's way in the environment and the mobility skills needed to travel safely and efficiently at home, school, work, and in the community.

As the Homebound Teacher, instructional services are provided so that students can return to school with the knowledge and skills sufficient to resume his/her previous academic programming.

 

Paula Bensing - Educational Diagnostician

 

Paula Bensing is an educational diagnostician for Seminole ISD. She and her husband, Robert, are parents/grandparents of three children and two granddaughters.

Paula believes her experiences as a mother of a child with a disability and as a former special education teacher, who specialized in students with severe/profound disabilities, help her fulfill her responsibilities as a diagnostician.

Paula appreciates the opportunity to work with the staff and students at Seminole High School and the Success Center.

Diane Jones - Educational Diagnostician

 

Diane Jones enjoys her position as an Educational Diagnostician for Seminole ISD. She enjoys working with the students as well as the parents. She has 7 years experience working in the field of speech therapy and 3 years experience working in the field of Educational Diagnostics.  Diane appreciates the opportunity to work with wonderful staff and for a great school district.

 

Sharla Gersbach - Transition Coordinator

 

Sharla Gersbach is the Transition Coordinator for Seminole ISD, having formerly served as a Content Mastery/resource teacher, general education teacher, and sub-varsity/varsity coach for the last 16 years. She is certified in generic special education, health, physical education, elementary education, and English as a Second Language. Her master's degree is in Administration and Supervision.

Sharla works to insure the district complies with the State Performance Plan and all the Indicators dealing with transitions. She attends ARD meetings, meets with outside agencies, assist students with career training and independent living skills, college admissions and scholarship applications in order for special education students to be successful in their transition from high school to post-secondary education or a career. Sharla and her husband Kevin feel blessed to have the opportunity to raise their 4 children in an exceptional school system and community.

Rebecca Ottaberry - GED Chief Examiner

Becky Ottaberry is currently the GED chief examiner for Seminole ISD, having formerly served the district as an educational diagnostician, general and special education teacher since her employment in 1990. Her certification areas include early childhood education, generic special education, elementary education, teacher of seriously emotionally disturbed and autistic, and professional certification of educational diagnostician and all levels mid-managment. Additionally, she has training in the Scottish Rite Dyslexia program and has taught first year students.

 

Jan Knasel - Secretary

 

Jan Knasel is the secretary for Special Education Services. Prior to the Special Education Department, she worked in the district at the Success Center for 11 years.
